About this publication
The Muri Mountains are a chain of sandstone mountains stretching across the frontiers of the federal states of Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba and Adamawa, running from west to east on the northern banks of the upper Benue valley. They are home to 18 ethnic groups whose languages belong to various distinct linguistic groups representing the Chadic family of Afro-Asiatic and two branches of the Niger-Congo language family, namely Adamawa and Benue-Congo. Very little is known about the peoples of this area, their cultures or their history. This comprehensive survey fills a major gap in the ethnography of Northern Nigeria.
The author was a member of an interdisciplinary research project from 1989-1993 and carried out anthropological fieldwork among
the peoples of the Muri Mountains.
